Hiking, spas, fine dining, and horseback riding – tucked into the heart of the Rocky Mountains lies Vail, Colorado, one of the most premier resort destinations in the country. Only a 2.5 hour drive from Denver Int’l Airport (or about 20 minutes from the more regional Vail-Eagle Airport), an incredible mountain adventure is not too out of reach.
The history of Vail cannot be explained without focusing on the development of its world-famous ski resort. In the early 1960s, Pete Seibert and Earl Eaton envisioned a winter paradise at this spot in the Rockies, and in 1966, Vail Ski Resort opened for its first season. Seibert was a soldier who had trained for World War II at nearby Camp Hale, and as he was one day camping on what would become Vail Resort, he recognized it as an ideal ski mountain.
Over the decades, Vail has become a year-round destination, attracting visitors with its stunning landscapes and plentiful activities throughout all four seasons. What started out as a ranching community has transformed into a world-renowned ski destination that has even hosted the alpine skiing events during the 1976 Winter Olympics. Today, it retains its original charm while continuing to offer world-class amenities and outdoor experiences year-round.

One of my favorite spots in Vail Valley, Yama Sushi offers an excellent menu of traditional Japanese dishes and signature rolls. The space also features a sleek bar where you can watch both the sushi chefs and bartenders do their thing. Be sure to reserve your table in advance, and prepare to enjoy exceptionally fresh sushi in the middle of the mountains. Yamasushivail.com

Fly Fishing
Maybe you’re a fly-fishing pro, or perhaps you’re just beginning to dip your toes in the water. Either way, the Vail Valley has plentiful rivers and creeks that are ideal for enjoying this relaxing activity. Head out on your own or tap a guide to show you the best spots on the waters of Gore Creek, the Eagle River or the Colorado River. Gore Creek Fly Fisherman, Vail Valley Anglers, Minturn Anglers, Colorado Angling Company and other operators offer enjoyable guided trips throughout the valley.

Take in the crisp mountain air on two wheels! Rent a bike and cruise along the miles of bike paths located nearby. Download a trail map online, or ask the Vail ticket office for a copy to plan your route and bring along on your ride. You’ll find there are trails of all different difficulty levels and lengths. A more relaxed bike ride in Vail could be fun for all ages, but of course it’s the mountain biking here that’s exceptionally special.
